This is the story of the Hurrungane mountains in Jotunheimen. And of the women who have lived with them and climbed them – or not cared about them.
Author Sigri Sandberg has gone far back in our storied mountain history to track down some of these women. Because were all hunters in the Viking Age men? And when did women start climbing? In the book, Sandberg tells about Norway's most beautiful alpine mountain area, about mythology and jotun women, hunting and innkeepers. She writes about the romanticization of the mountains in the 19th century, about the emergence of modern mountain sports and about women in skirts on their way to the peaks. Sandberg draws lines from ancient times to the present day, and in the summer of 2015 the author herself will climb the sharp peaks.
With Fear and Rejoicing in Jotunheimen, these mountains, some of Norway's foremost national symbols, get their unique story told.
