Sámi Reindeer Herders in Alaska 1901-1937

During the period 1894-1898, the U.S. government started to recruit Sámi, and their families, for their expertise in reindeer herding. For a set period of time, they were invited to come live, teach, work and travel in Alaska. Most of the immigration coming from Norway up until this point had been Norwegians trying to find their luck in the USA.

The Sámi immigration, however, was based on an extensive need for their knowledge and skill that they had accrued over many centuries and passed down from generation to generation. During this period, the Sámi sent home letters to a Christian Sámi newspaper named "Nuorttanaste” (the Eastern Star). This book is based on their letters which account for how they lived in this harsh new environment. They are a window into the Sámi’s adventurous travels and way of life in the Alaskan territories.
