Fruit growing has long roots in Norwegian history, and since ancient times a rich variety of different fruit varieties have been grown in this country. For the very first time, the home varieties of apples, plums and pears have been collected in an updated masterpiece.
From the 19th century, beautiful, illustrated pomological books were published in Europe, where unique fruit varieties were presented and displayed. In Norway, Norwegian Pomology. Volume I: Apples was published in 1939, followed by a volume on pears in 1958. The planned book on plums was never published.
Apples, Pears and Plums is part of this book tradition with its short, informative texts and accompanying artwork that depicts the different varieties in detail.
This magnificent book is richly illustrated with detailed, hand-painted watercolors by Hege Gjerde Sviggum and highlights over 130 varieties that have been common in Norwegian orchards throughout history. In addition to a description of each individual variety, you will find introductory articles on traditional fruit growing, pests, plant health and storage.
The book is a declaration of love for Norwegian fruit growing that both documents knowledge that is disappearing and inspires us to preserve the old heritage varieties.
"In a book about fruit varieties, a pomology, one is completely dependent on good illustrations of the varieties. Hege Gjerde Sviggum has achieved that with her fine hand-painted watercolors in this book."
"A book that will become a new standard work for these species and be interesting and appreciated by both professional and hobby fruit growers."
